Looking Back: Reflecting on the Last 5 Years of Florida Hurricanes
Last month, we talked about what to expect for the 2023 hurricane season, and how to make sure that you and your family are ready. Hopefully, you’ve had a chance to prepare your home and your family, and youβll be staying tuned to local media for updates.Β
As the hurricane season has now officially started, it got us thinking about the absolute devastation that hurricanes have caused here in Florida.
Letβs take a look back at the major storms and hurricanes that have ripped through Florida over the last 5 years.
2018
2018 will be remembered for the sheer devastation caused by Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Michael. The season produced 15 named storms, including eight hurricanes of which two were major.
Hurricane Michael made landfall near Mexico Beach, Florida, with maximum winds of 160 mph. It was the strongest hurricane on record to strike the Florida panhandle, and the first Category 5 hurricane to hit the United States since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Sadly, Hurricane Michael killed 50 people in Florida, and state-wide economic damage was estimated at $18.4 billion.
2019
During the 2019 Hurricane Season, there were 18 named storms, which included 6 hurricanes. 3 of these hurricanes were major, including Hurricane Dorian, which caused damages estimated at $10 million.
2020
In 2020, the Atlantic hurricane season featured a total of 31 tropical or subtropical cyclones, making it the most active Atlantic Hurricane Season on record.
Hurricane Sally caused damages in Escambia County alone adding up to $309 million.
2021
During the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season, there were 14 tropical storms. The 7 hurricanes that landed during the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season were: Elsa, Grace, Henri, Ida, Larry, Nicholas, and Sam.
2022
In 2022 there were 14 named tropical systems, including 8 hurricanes, and 2 of these hurricanes were major. Most memorable were Hurricane Ian (which likely caused between $53 billion and $74 billion in insured losses), Hurricane Fiona, and Hurricane Nicole.
Honored to help
At Boggs Law Group we have had the privilege of helping people who have been caught in the aftermath of a hurricane as they try to recover. Many of them have been injured and have had their homes ravaged by the unrelenting winds.
The team at Boggs Law Group is familiar with the damage that hurricanes have caused to homes throughout the state, and the sheer havoc wreaked on our communities. After the tropical storms and hurricanes have passed, we have seen the impact on homes, especially roofs, and severe structural damage. We understand that expensive repairs are needed to restore homes.
We are sadly also familiar with the reluctance of insurance companies to do the right thing. Instead, we have seen them put up barriers by disputing and denying claims and making lowball offers.
Amy Boggs has been vocal in the media about the injustices that many face and how she has helped them in their battle with the insurance companies to claim what they deserve. Together, we have joined the fight against insurance companies who refuse to pay compensation fairly to those who need it to rebuild their lives.
At Boggs Law Group, we know how to get your home insurance claim settled so that you can pick up the pieces after a major storm or hurricane. We are a passionate, dedicated team at Boggs Law Group, and itβs our experience that counts. We know how to fight for what is deserved.
As we brace for the 2023 Atlantic Hurricane season, we hope that you and your family will stay safe. We are here if you need someone strong to fight for you.
